A few years ago Volvo stated that they want to rethink themselves as a company and surely enough when they released the XC90 it became clear that they are serious about it. Well, the second and third cars to join this major change in Volvo have been released quite recently. While many would say that this is an odd move, we are pretty sure that they know what they are doing. The all new 2017 Volvo S 90 has been officially released in Spain a few weeks ago. Even though there are people saying that it is using a crossover platform and that it is not as good as many other mid-size executive sedans, the S90 has to be one of the best out there.
2017 VOLVO S 90 PRICE AND REVIEW
How is this possible and how did Volvo manage to turn the platform of a crossover in one suited for a sedan? Well, there is one simple answer for that. The SPA architecture which underpins their three most expensive models has been actually first designed to underpin a sedan. However, because the market is usually more keen on crossovers, Volvo decided to release first the XC90 in order to benefit as much as possible from this trend. This means that the $47,000 S90 is, by far, one of the most refined and best sedans in its class. Also, the fact that it doesn’t look like all the other German and wannabe-German cars out there allows Volvo to stay at the top of their class.
INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR
Like with the XC90, the 2017 Volvo S 90 is boasting an all-new look inside and out. This is not really like any other out there which means that the S90 looks and feels fresh. The body of the car is subtle, it features curvaceous lines and there are plenty of details on the car to make it stand out. The headlights include daytime running lights shaped like the Thor’s hammer, the taillights wrap around the trunk nicely and the roofline is lower than on many others, so it looks aggressive. Also, as standard, it gets 18-inch wheels and high-performance tires. The S90 still shares some design features with the XC90 but it looks vastly different and we might also say that it looks better as well.
Mostly thanks to its modular platform, the cabin of the S90 is larger than that of its competitors. There is a lot more room inside the trunk for larger items while in the cabin four or five passengers can be accommodated with ease. One of the most striking points has to be the design of the dashboard. Somehow Volvo decided to go with a classic-looking interior with real wood, aluminum, leather and very little plastic. The end result is a car that feels more premium than a BMW 7 Series and where you can really enjoy the ride. The dashboard has very few buttons which also make it feel unique and the large center screen is wrapped in leather and wood and offers a really nice vibe when using it.
One of the points that will hurt the sales most are the engines offered with the 2017 Volvo S 90. This is because Volvo decided not to go with large engines like all of their competitors. Instead, at least for now, they are offering a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 in turbocharged or turbocharged and supercharged forms. The T5 offers 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and it is only available with front-wheel drive.
The T6, on the other hand, goes to 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and front or all-wheel drive are available. The two are mated to an 8-speed automatic which is quite smooth. In the future, a hybrid with 411 horsepower is also expected but unfortunately, a larger engine is likely not which is a shame.
