2018 Buick Riviera – Luxury Car

The Riviera always was a two-door luxury car which despite its rather high price tag always managed to sell quite well and to be a flagship for Buick. Unfortunately though, the car has been discontinued back in 1999 because that model was not that great and it didn’t sell as good as Buick hoped. Now, nearly two decades since it was discontinued, it looks like a new model might be released with the 2018 Buick Riviera, a very interesting car which will stray a bit from the original recipe of a two-door coupe. The first concept was showcased a few years ago in China and then Buick said that the car would be a four-door sedan aimed at the luxury car market.

While a few years ago Buick didn’t really have a suitable platform for such a car, it now seems that the upcoming Riviera will be built on the exact same Alpha platform as the Cadillac CT6. However, unlike the Cadillac which is being sold in the US, the Riviera is actually expected to be sold in China and a few other countries such as Australia and even Europe where the Buick name is more appreciated and people take great proud in owing a Buick car. The price for this model is still an unknown factor but considering its platform and that Buick wants it to be their next flagship, expect it to cost well over $50,000 which will certainly make things interesting, especially since the new Continental comes at roughly the same price point.

2018 BUICK RIVIERA DESIGN

The car released back in 2013 showed us a new path which the future Buick cars were going to take and after three years they are finally starting to follow it.

Buick Riviera Concept

The upcoming 2018 Buick Riviera is certainly going to have a very similar design approach to this particular concept so unlike the CT6. For example, the Riviera might just get the coupe-like shape everyone is so fond off these days. This would put it in a different class than the CT6, a class where cars such as the Panamera and the BMW 6 Series are the best sellers.

PRICE AND EXPECTED RELEASE DATE OF 2018 BUICK RIVIERA

However, if Buick manages to get a good quality vehicle at just $50,000 then we should have a clear winner, especially in China where it would likely outsell any other of its direct competitors. In fact we believe that the car would have a place on the US market as well but because it will most likely be built in China some people might not like it all that much. There is still quite a bit of time until its official release date in the late 2017 or early 2018 which should allow Buick to solve some of the issues with the Chinese production.

2018 BUICK RIVIERA ENGINE

In order to make the 2018 Buick Riviera able to compete with the likes of all those European super-sedans, GM will most likely outfit it with some of their more interesting engines. We still expect a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 as the base unit but this should be tuned for more than 250 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range a 3 liter twin-turbocharged V6 with close to 400 horsepower should also be available.

These two will likely be available with rear or all wheel drive and their new 10 speed automatic gearbox which is one of the fastest on the market. Being a Buick we don’t really expect any high performance version from the car but in order to be able to face those other powerful sedans, it might just get an all new 4.8 liter twin-turbocharged V8 which would easily be able to provide 500 horsepower, more than enough to make the new Riviera a true super-sedan.
